Some brands of travel gear appeal to those with a lot of money to spend, people who won’t hesitate to shell out $700 for a jacket. However, when you buy something from Columbia Sportswear, you can usually be sure you’re getting great value. The company makes quality travel clothing that can hang out with the best on the slopes or in the water, but you won’t have to pay a month’s worth of rent to get their best tech.

For almost a decade I ran a site called Practical Travel Gear, first as a solo operation on Blogspot and then as a WordPress group blog. (I sold it in 2015). So I went through a lot of travel clothes. Since I’m also on the road once a month on average, I also get plenty of opportunities to see how this clothing performs in the real world, sometimes in harsh conditions during adventures.

I haven’t worn many Columbia clothes so far and it is a brand that I highly recommend to people who are embarking on a journey that will last months or years. I would also recommend their winter jackets which have the Omni Heat reflective dots on the inside because they really keep you warm. I have also been happy with their pants and shirts over the years.

I recently got my hands on two new items of yours that I have been testing on my travels.

Columbia Clothing and Travel Gear 1

The first is an item from your entry into the underwear space. These travel briefs are supremely comfortable, even when I wear them for 24 hours straight like on a recent taxi-bus-cab-plane1-plane2-car trip home. They’re nice and stretchy and the flatlock seams mean they feel good against the skin all over.

Columbia sportswear underwear also has the key travel component for people who pack light: they dry quickly. They also absorb moisture while on you. Made of polyester and spandex, they only take a few hours to dry after being washed in the sink. However, if you have to wear them for two days, there’s another useful feature: “odor-resistant technology contains an antimicrobial agent to control odors.”

All of these things are true of other quality travel underwear though, so what makes this version special? Well, they’re half the price (or better). As is typical in Columbia, you get similar quality without paying similar prices. Instead of about $20 for one, you get two for $22 or $23. See some examples here, including summaries. Search the same store and you’ll see women’s versions, plus sports bras and camisoles.

Columbia Clothing and Travel Gear 2

hat’s not me modeling the underwear above, it’s been many decades since my stomach was this flat. But that’s me on top in the Columbia EX Eco Waterproof Jacket.

This is a high-performance rain jacket that will keep you nice and dry, but as the name suggests, it’s also good for the planet. It’s made from recycled materials, with 21 plastic bottles saved from a landfill for each jacket. The manufacturing process also uses less water than usual, such as 13 fewer gallons (51 liters). I’ve seen jackets before touted as eco-friendly, but this one goes all the way: even the zipper and eyelets are made from recycled materials.

However, you do not give up anything in terms of performance. It has built-in OutDry Extreme technology that allows steam from your hot body to escape. Just understand that like any jacket with this type of membrane, it won’t work in the hot tropics where humidity is high – that’s just physics. However, if you’re in a cooler climate, you’ll stay dry underneath. It has flat taped seams, zipped pockets covered with a flap, adjustable cuffs, a cinch at the bottom, and a cinched hood.

Although you have to like white. Because this jacket is completely recycled and reduces water consumption, no dyes are used. As you can see in the photo above, the women’s version has a more contoured fit.

Follow this link to go directly to the jackets page on Columbia Sportswear’s site, and if you poke around in their clearance section, you’ll find the inventory they’re trying to sell for a lower price.
